About Us

PIONEERING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN NURSING

The AI Nurses Network is a clinical research network designed to support and advance the role of nurses in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). It comprises an interdisciplinary team of nurses and AI experts and has an independent advisory board that offers ongoing advice and support to the clinical research network.

Core team

The AI Nurses Network is run by a core team with expertise in nursing and artificial intelligence who are supported by a patient advisor. They promote the training and educational resources, seed funding and scholarships, and news and events that the network provides to supports nurses in developing and applying AI techniques and AI tools in their professional practice to improve patient care and population health.

Professor Rebecca Oakey

Dr Siobhán O'Connor

Dr Siobhán O'Connor is a Senior Lecturer at King’s College London with a multidisciplinary background in nursing and informatics. She conducts AI research in nursing and leads the AI Nurses Network.

Professor Rebecca Oakey is a Professor of Epigenetics and Dean of Doctoral Studies at King’s College London. She leads King’s Innovation Scholars Programme and supports the provision of AI education and training in the AI Nurses Network.

Dr Crina Grosan

Dr Crina Crosan is a Senior Lecturer at King’s College London who researches artificial intelligence in healthcare. She supports the AI Nurses Network by facilitating seed funding and networking events.

Dr Mengying Zhang

Dr Mengying Zhang is a Research Associate at King's College London with a multidisciplinary background in both nursing and finance. She supports the AI Nurses Network through facilitating dissemination activities and events.

Dr Joanne Cull

Dr Joanne Cull the Head of Nursing for Nurse and Midwife Led Research at ACORN (A Centre of Research for Nurses and Midwives) at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and seconded to London South Bank University as Associate Professor. She supports the AI Nurses Network by facilitating seed funding and networking events.

Professor Jo Armes

Professor Jo Armes worked clinically in haematology and medical/clinical oncology and now leads the digital health group at the University of Surrey. She supports the AI Nurses Network by facilitating the dissemination and networking events.

Mr David Woodcock

David Woodcock is the Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) representative on the AI Nurses network team. He worked in central government, the National Health Service (NHS) and IT throughout his career. He supports the seed funding and networking events.

Xiaoyang Li is a Research Assistant at King's College London with a background in nursing. She supports the AI Nurses Network through facilitating dissemination activities and events.

Country directors

The AI Nurses Network is expanding globally with nurses who specialise in artificial intelligence taking the lead for their country. The country director(s) promote the training and educational resources, seed funding and scholarships, and news and events that the network provides to supports nurses around the world in developing and applying AI techniques and AI tools in their professional practice to improve patient care and population health. 

Asia

Hong Kong 

Dr Vivian Hui is an Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and an adjunct faculty at the School of Nursing, University of Pittsburgh, USA. Her research interests intersect health technology innovation, domestic violence, and nursing informatics including artificial intelligence. She leads the AI Nurses Network in Hong Kong and is also the global education lead for the network. 

Taiwan

Dr Lu-Yen Anny Chen is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing, at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Her research interests integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning in nursing practice particularly in post operative care. She leads the AI Nurses Network in Taiwan and across south-east Asia with the other Asian leads.

Canada

Dr Charlene Chu is an Assistant Professor at is an Assistant Professor at the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto, and an Affiliate Scientist at KITE Toronto Rehab at the University Health Network. She is cross-appointed (status only) with the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work’s Institute for Life Course & Aging, as well as the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute at the University of Toronto. She leads an interdisciplinary team including engineers, computer scientists, physiotherapists, and nurses and holds two patents about novel computer vision applications for the functional assessments of older adults. She co-leads the AI Nurses Network in Canada with Dr Charlene Ronquillo and across the Americas with the other north, central and south American leads. 

Dr Charlene Ronquillo is a Filipina scholar, Registered Nurse, health informatician, and lead of the Health Informatics Equity Lab at the School of Nursing, University of British Columbia. Her work aims to improve equity in healthcare with thoughtful, meaningful, and inclusive technologies and improve equity in health informatics through critical approaches to health technology development, implementation, including the evaluations that ensure the meaningful inclusion of non-dominant groups in the conceptualization, design, development, and implementation of health technologies in health systems. She co-leads the AI Nurses Network in Canada with Dr Charlene Chu and across the Americas with the other north, central and south American leads.

United States of America (USA)

Dr Tamara G. R. Macieira at the University of Florida is an expert in nursing informatics, standardized nursing terminologies, and data science, including the application of machine learning and large language model (LLM) techniques. She has applied these methods specifically to examine the impact of palliative nursing care on hospitalized patient outcomes for cognitively impaired older adults through the analyses of nursing data retrieved from electronic health records (EHRs) from diverse health settings. She leads the AI Nurses Network in the USA and across the Americas with the other north, central and south American leads.
